Poverty reduction and the sustainable development goals: a bibliometric study focused on the Global South

Abstract

This research undertakes a bibliometric examination of the existing literature addressing the relationship between poverty and sustainability development, summarising available studies. Using relevant keywords, we identified 920 peer-reviewed articles from the Scopus database, spanning the period from 2015 to 2024. Employing the Visualisation of Similarity Viewer (VOSviewer) for this bibliometric analysis, we categorised prominent publications, noteworthy journals, and contributing institutions. Furthermore, our review uncovered a clear pattern in research, suggesting a lack of recognition regarding the impact of sustainable development on reducing poverty levels in countries of the Global South. In terms of contributions, this study delineates five primary thematic clusters that elucidate the ways in which sustainability development reduces poverty. Through the application of text-mining analysis, our research establishes connections between specific environmental terms and the recent surge in global poverty.
