Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) ist ein neuer postkeynesianischer Ansatz, der von prominenten linken Politikern unterstützt wird. Aktuell gewinnt er vor allem in den USA an Einfluss. Die MMT geht davon aus, dass eine Regierung, die in ihrer eigenen Währung Kredite aufnimmt, nicht zahlungsunfähig werden kann: Sie kann so viele Banknoten drucken lassen, wie sie für die Bezahlung ihrer Verbindlichkeiten benötigt. Einige Befürworter der MMT rechtfertigen auf Basis der MMT exzessive Staatsausgaben, sie ignorieren dabei mögliche Probleme, die typischerweise mit einer hohen Staatsverschuldung verbunden sind. Die Kerngedanken der MMT sind zwar grundsätzlich zu akzeptieren, die Wirkungen dieser Theorie sind aber sehr weitreichend.
