Abstract

Zusammenfassung Das nordamerikanische Freihandelsabkommen NAFTA besteht seit 24 Jahren. Im Rahmen der protektionistischen Wende der USA steht es derzeit auf dem Prüfstand. Die Kritik der USA bezieht sich vor allem auf die bilateralen US-Handelsdefizite. Die Autoren geben einen Überblick über die ökonomische Integration Nordamerikas seit 1993: Der Handel zwischen den USA und Mexiko hat sehr stark zugenommen, seine Bedeutung für die US-Wirtschaft ist dabei nicht zu unterschätzen. Bei einer Kündigung des Abkommens würden grenzüberschreitende Liefer- und Produktionsketten zerschlagen. Die Autoren beurteilen die Vorschläge der USA und gehen auf den Zeithorizont für die möglichen Neuverhandlungen ein.
