Abstract

Harnessing satellite resources to designate a communication network has felicitous the flexibility to bounteous applications, including broadcasting, news gathering, aeronautical and maritime tracking. The peculiarities of the satellite-integrated terrestrial network offer high-throughput services, stable and reliable network quality, and seamless geographical coverage of remote areas. Lamentably, the structural features of the network are vulnerable to the intrusion of unauthorized users and can bring drastically hazardous glitches. Therefore, authentication is an appealing solution for a substantial boost in the services of this network. Numerous researchers have investigated and proposed solutions in the literature, but some of them are user-oriented while others have security or efficiency issues. Through this paper, we project a reliable and secure satellite-to-satellite authentication protocol, exploiting the complexity aids of the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem. The competency of the protocol against the various attack is portrayed with the formal proof in ROR (Real-or-random) model, Burrows–Abadi–Needham (BAN) logic, descriptive proof under informal analysis, and the verification tool scyther. Furthermore, the computational, communication, and bandwidth overhead comparison with the existing protocol such as Thakur et al. and Soltani et al. by $$16.58\%$$ 16.58 % and $$33.83\%$$ 33.83 % that indicates the efficiency and superiority of the proposed protocol.
