Circular capitalism: unlocking the power of ownership and citizenship through stewardship

Abstract

Corporations and citizens alike are confronted with two major forces that seem to be converging at this point in history: societal demand for a greater emphasis on sustainability and major business disruptions, driven primarily by digitalization. In this context, it is no surprise that leaders call “to build a world that is greener, smarter, and fairer” (Georgieva 2020, 11). This commentary paper argues that to gain a better understanding of these trends, it is important to examine the concepts underlying such transformations, and especially their interdependencies. While ownership defines the rights and duties that come with the possession of assets, citizenship determines the relationship of the individual or the institution to society. It proposes an integrated analysis of these two concepts by applying a life-cycle perspective. The two cycles are highly interdependent and their sustainability is determined by the appropriate design of ownership and citizenship principles. It concludes with an appeal to all decision-makers to move toward circular capitalism to fully unlock the power of ownership and citizenship through stewardship.
