Abstract

Rock avalanche is a kind of mountain disaster with strong impact and long spreading, which poses a great threat to the safety of life and property and ecological environment in mountain areas. As an effective measure for such disaster reduction, the rationality of the layout of catching dam is of great significance to the mitigation scheme design. Firstly, the influence of the location and height of the catching dam on the deposition characteristics of dry rock avalanche was studied by the means of laboratory model tests. Secondly, the numerical model was established using the three-dimensional particle flow code, and the interaction between granular avalanche and the catching dam was analyzed depending on the calibrated parameters. Finally, a series of three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out to study the impact force on the catching dam. The results showed that, the position of the catching dam could affect the kinematic process and deposition characteristics obviously, catching dam at the deceleration area can significantly reduce the movement distance, improve the interception efficiency, and reduce the impact range of the rock avalanche. The movement distance, and width and length of the deposition decreased almost linearly with the height of the catching dam. It might be better to arrange the catching dam at the deceleration zone, and the height should be set to about two times the thickness of the accumulation body, which can intercept more than 80% of the debris, and can shorten the movement distance by more than 25%.
