Tournament constriction coefficient based particle swarm optimization (TPSO-Co) for engineering design optimization problems

Abstract

This research uses particle swarm optimization with the Tournament Constriction Coefficient to resolve engineering design optimization problems. Mostly the engineering design problems can be formulated as constrained optimization problems. If the constraint functions are non-linear and non-convex in nature, constrained optimization becomes a computationally challenging task. Therefore, hybrid algorithms are immensely popular to solve optimization problems which are particularly unalike from the existing classical optimization techniques. In order to deal with constrained optimization problems, in this paper, we have implemented a hybrid algorithm called the tournament PSO-Co (TPSO-Co) which is based upon the concept of tournament games and constriction coefficient-based Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO-Co). Here, the performance of the proposed algorithm is improved over that of other well-known optimization algorithms that have previously been examined throughout the literature. To illustrate the proposed approach, some well-known test problems as well as engineering design problems have been solved and computed results have been presented and compared with the others. Finally, the significance of the study and the scope of possible future research are suggested.
