Abstract

Objective This study investigates the mediating role of digital capabilities in the relationship between organizational creativity and international business competence. Methods We conducted a survey of 382 managers within Brazilian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across various industries in Brazil and analyzed data using regression analysis. Findings The results indicate that digital capabilities partially mediate the effect of organizational creativity on international business competence. Organizational creativity directly enhances international business competence and fosters the development of digital capabilities, further augmenting this competence. Originality By drawing upon the resource-based view, this study advances research on digital capabilities, highlighting their influential role in international business success stimulated by organizational creativity. Implications For practitioners, this study underscores the relevance of fostering a synergistic blend of human creativity and technological proficiency to reinforce the competitive advantage of SMEs in the global market. Plain English summary For an SME to be internationally competent, it must blend creativity with technology. This study explores the role of digital capabilities in linking organizational creativity and international business competence among Brazilian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A survey of 382 managers across various industries found that digital capabilities bridge organizational creativity and international business competence. While organizational creativity directly boosts international competence, it also helps develop digital capabilities that further enhance this success. This research enriches the understanding of digital capabilities' vital role in harnessing organizational creativity for global competitiveness. These findings are valuable for practitioners, who can stimulate blending human creativity with technological expertise, strengthening SMEs' competitive edge in the international market.
