Linking ecological vulnerability and ecosystem service value in a fast-growing metropolitan area of eastern India: a scenario-based sustainability approach

Abstract

The rapid urbanization process has significantly transformed natural landscapes through extensive changes in land use and land cover in urban areas. The present research assessed how urban ecological vulnerability in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) affects ecosystem service values (ESVs). The study developed a ‘Pressure–Sensitivity–Resilience’ framework using the SPCA-entropy method to analyze Urban Ecological Vulnerability (UEV) by considering the relative importance and weights of the indicators. The results found that the area under the ‘very high’ and ‘high’ ecological vulnerability was 6.85% and 7.47%, which increased by 11.01% and 14.65%, respectively, between 2001 and 2019. The overall change in ESV between 1991 and 2019 was (−)36.88% and (−)8.31%, respectively. An ANN-Markov scenario-based assessment was conducted to measure ecological vulnerability levels and provide recommendations for alternative management strategies. The area with high ecological vulnerability was most affected under both the current and economic growth scenarios but less impacted under the conservation scenario, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural land. The assessment has yielded a location-specific management framework and policy guidance for the sustainable management of ecological land.
