Abstract

This article analyzes the relationship between school dropout and smoking habitsin Mexico, using data from the National Addiction Survey 2011. We selected people aged between 12 and 23,under the assumption that in this age range both decisions are vital for their future development. We estimate bivariate probit models using instrumental variables to control for bidirectional causality between smoking and school attendance. We found that having smoked recently or smoking frequently results in an increase in the dropout rate, but at the same time school attendance reduces the likelihood of smoking; however, the latter effect is smaller. Public policies could take advantage of this interdependence.
