Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed significant changes in the way organizations operate and function. Working from home and flexible working hours have become the „new normal“ for a large portion of employees. Today, the question is not whether to work from home but what the optimal model is for both employees and organizations. This article presents in a general manner the results of research related to remote work, including current trends, definitions of “remote work†, advantages, and disadvantages of this model for companies and employees. Among the advantages are lower costs (for building rent, transportation, parking, food), access to a wider talent pool, reduced employee turnover, and fewer employee absences, greater flexibility and autonomy, and higher job satisfaction. Challenges for organizations are related to team spirit and collaboration, onboarding new employees, maintaining organizational culture, and decreased creativity and innovation. Disadvantages for employees include feelings of isolation, health issues, and reduced career development opportunities. In the studies examined, some data and effects are interpreted differently. According to some studies, productivity increases when working from home, while others suggest a decrease. Possible benefits for employees include an improved work-life balance and reduced stress levels. However, with improper time management and lack of personal boundaries, remote work can negatively impact them.
