Some Semantic Problems in Contemporary Information Systems

Abstract

Information systems operate on bits – data – interpreted by specific systems as signs and symbols. Any of this type of operations of data are subject to ruling in formal systems. Analyses of the “correctness” are possible only on the syntactic level. The analysis of the semantics or meaning thus remains beyond the capabilities of these processing systems. Even if some of the concepts are denoted by tags compliant with the standards of RDF and OWL, the systems still operate on signs constituting those tags. Therefore determination of the research subject and its nature requires ordering the used concepts.
