Abstract

The rapid increase in unemployment at the beginning of the nineties in Switzerland has led to the introduction of a whole range of active labor market programs that should help the jobseekers to find a new job. In this paper we are analyzing the internal dynamics of unemployment by means of an absorbing markov chain. Based on the properties of the transition matrix, several indicators such as the expected duration in the different unemployment states, the participation probabilities in an active labor market program and the average duration of an unemployment spell after completion of a program are estimated.
