Abstract

Three topics exemplify how knowledge of employment draws on various disciplines, which are so led to intimate collaboration, mainly on economics, statistics and econometrics. In order to distinguish between "frictional unemployment" and "disequilibrium unemployment", it is convenient to refer to a conceptual system and to a Beveridge curve, correctly defined and estimated. Caracterization of labor market flows is proving to be required for knowledge of economic determinants or social implications of unemployment and employment; but it raises serious statistical difficulties. The same can be said about heterogeneities, which are interesting to know but are making problems for econometric investigations.
