Abstract

In the Captaincy of Pernambuco, in Portuguese America, sugar cane mill lords and sugar cane farmers managed throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to secure successive extensions of a privilege guaranteeing that their their property would not be confiscated as payment for debt. To understand how this privilege helped preserve the patrimony of the local nobility in the sugar-based economy of Pernambuco, the origins of this privilege and debates surrounding it were analyzed. Research for this work involved accessing diverse historical sources, mainly the Overseas Historical Archive, the Historical Documents collection of the National Library of Rio de Janeiro and the Torre do Tombo National Archive in Lisbon.
