Abstract

The present article analyses the increasing production of Mexican tomato between 1920 and 1956 as well as its consolidation as an exporting issue particularly into the American market. Firstly, it is concluded that due to mainly American and likewise Canadian market demands, Mexicans –mainly in the north-eastern areas– accomplished an agrarian emporium able to supply big and demanding markets. Secondly, due to sanitary regulations together with importers´ demands, Mexicans successfully specialized in producing varieties meeting exigent quality regulations that led to competitiveness with USA products.
