Campesinado y pluriactividad en la Navarra Cantábrica en la primera mitad del siglo XIX

Abstract

This article analyzes peasant pluriactivity in the north of Navarra during the 19th century. The specific case of Lesaca is studied, a village where the traditional iron industry generated a huge demand for indirect jobs. Sources used are the Lecasca 1811 cadaster and the 1824 and 1860 censuses and notarial documents for two districts of the village in question. In a context where the majority of the agricultural holdings were small, with an abundance of tenants, the peasant pluriactivity was mainly related to the traditional iron industry. Apart from the head of the family, the offspring and relatives were also important in those complementary activities. The income from these activities was fundamental for many peasant families.
