Capitalismo agrario en la frontera. Buenos Aires y la región pampeana en el siglo XIX

Abstract

In the 19th century, agrarian production growth on the pampas was outstanding, This is usually explained as a result of the emergence of capitalism, which allowed good use to be made of the comparative advantages of the region. The consolidation of property rights and the lack of Ancien Régime ties in a new territory were other significant factors. This paper discusses the different stages of that growth throughout the 19th century, by highlighting some key continuities, such as the persistence of long-term social or economical practices, or the prominent presence of familiar enterprises and labour practices where the salary had only played a minor role. The agrarian growth on the pampas is compared to other leading cases of agrarian capitalism.
