El crecimiento de la ganadería de Cantabria entre los siglos XVI y XIX: una temprana especialización regional

Abstract

This study quantifies the size, structure and development of Cantabria animal husbandry during the preindustrial era. It has a dual purpose: to understand the extend of the livestock expansion and to advance some hypothesis regarding the factors for its evolution and consequences for agrarian growth. The period of greatest growth in animal husbandry was roughly from 1660 to 1780, while a deep crisis occurred at the end of the Ancien Régime and there was barely any recovery even after the rapid expansion in 1815 and following years. The evolution of animal husbandry was closely connected to the demand for draught animals from the Cantabrian coastal and inland cereal-growing regions, and to land supply for grazing and silage. Both factors led to an early regional specialization in stock raising.
