Abstract

This article reviews some of the relevant contributions throughout the last decade to our understanding of the historical organization of agricultural labour. It deals with six topics in particular: Agricultural labour demand, labour cost, labour supply (discussing the different ways of defining `active` population in the primary sector), agricultural productivity, institutional framework, and internal structure of the agricultural labour force (i. e., competition among agricultural workers). Some suggestions regarding closer contact with Development Economics are made in the final conclusion.
