Abstract

This is a critical survey of some of the papers given at the VII Conference of the SEHA, held in Baeza (Jaén) in June 1995. Out of a total of twenty papers presented at this session, ten –dealing with the period before 1850- are considered. The main question concerns the way in which these pieces of work can improve our knowledge of the economic performance of the sector. In addition, they are used to contrast some current controversies on the character and dimensions of economic growth in preindustrial economies. Also the possibility of applying some categories of national account to this period and of contrasting them with regional trends are discussed.
