Abstract

This paper analyses the investment effort made in Spain in R&D in the last few years. After showing that Spain is lagging behind the most advanced European countries in R&D intensity and that disparities across all EU countries are large but decreasing, the paper draws its attention to the Spanish regions. By means of using both inequality indicators and non-parametric techniques, the paper shows that regional disparities are high and, but from 2004 onwards, without definitive signs of declining, the only exception being the group of public administration. Additionally, the paper demonstrates that the external shape of the total distribution has undergone important changes, compatible with a high degree of persistence in the regional ranking. Finally, the paper concludes by stating that both per capita GDP and the industrial mix are key factors in explaining the R&D regional distribution in Spain.
