Abstract

Джон Мэйстринг (1894-1943), один из родоначальников американского институционализма, оставил и художественное наследие. Впервые публикуемый ниже на русском языке рассказ в свое время был оценен коллегами Мэйнстринга как аллегорическая переоценка роли личного фактора производства. В ходе последовавшей дискуссии Мэйнстринг покаялся и изменил финал. К сожалению, поздняя редакция рассказа не обнаружена до сих пор (перевод Ефима Кандопожского).
