Abstract

Almost unnoticed by the outside world, over the past four years China has been moving toward a new stage of development. It is quietly shifting from a successful low- and middle-tech manufacturing economy to a sophisticated high-tech one. Chinese government is not only funding megaprojects in sunrise areas but at the same time is forcing foreign multinational companies in principal sectors to share their technologies with Chinese state-owned enterprises as a condition of operating in the country.
