Abstract

The development of transportation and transit systems offers one of the most important perspectives for Russia's current economic situation. The transportation industry significantly influences economic growth in general and the expansion of international trade in particular. Maritime transportation has a special role to play in this process. This article focuses on. the significance of the ports of St.Petersburg and surrounding Leningrad region for Baltic Sea freight traffic. The author considers the main developmental tendencies and points to the most important investment projects for the enhancement of the competitiveness of the region's transportation system.
