Abstract

The paper deals with the challenges and contradictions of the reforming process in China. The general direction of the reforms is still being supported by the majority of population, however, rising income differentiation, social insecurity, corruption and violations during privatization of SOEs are becoming of a growing concern of Chinese people. There are those who believe the difficulties that China encountered during the transformation result from the strategy of reforms itself and should be resolved by partial revitalization of the former social system, while the others explain the problems by inconsistency of the reforms, which could be solved by acceleration of the reforming process. Anyway, the authorities in China have to adjust to the prevailing public opinion and make some modifications in the development strategy.
