Abstract

This article was written for the 85-th anniversary of the death of Georgi Plehanov, one of Russia's greatest social scientists. The author explores Plehanov's work in the fields of philosophy, history, economics and the history of social thought. Stress is given to the materialistic worldview of Plehanov. The article points out that while he was a revolutionary Marxist, Plehanov recognized certain humanistic ideals which were prevalent in early twentiethcentury Russian society. One example is the conception of philosophical and moral supremacy of human beings who alone are capable of determining their own values.
