Abstract

The World Tourism Organization (WTO) published preliminary summaries of international tourist arrivals and receipts for 2000, by region and for the major destinations. The global total of international tourist arrivals was estimated as 698 million in 2000 (excluding day-visits), about 7% up on 1999 (which had shown a 4% increase on 1998), with record arrivals for all six regions. Tourist arrivals are presented for 40 countries of East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) by six sub-regions, totalling about 112 million in 2000, 15% above 1999 and the highest regional increase in 2000. Receipts from international tourism in this region and hotel capacity and demand data are also presented. WTO estimated receipts from international tourism in EAP as US$75 billion in 1999 (including receipts from day-visitors, excluding international fares), 16% of the global receipts of about US$455 billion, which increased to about US$476 billion in 2000.
