A Constructivist Approach to College-Level Economic Education

Abstract

This paper begins with a critique of the prevailing stimulus/response approach to economic education in which instructors communicate (typically via lecture) their view of economic reality and the student is expected to replicate that view. In the alternative constructivist approach, economic reality is understood by building on the student's own economic experiences. This process results in active and engaged learning. Initial class experimentation is discussed along with future research plans.
