Exploring the Factors Affecting Career Advancement Opportunities for Women Executives in the Service Sector

Abstract

Career development for women is becoming an important issue as more and more women are joining the workforce of the country. The main objective of this paper is to explore the factors enhancing career advancement opportunities for women executives. This has been pursued by interviewing 271 women executives working in selected organizations in the service sector in Punjab. Item and reliability analysis and actor analysis have been carried out. The study reveals that the respondents demonstrate a high level of optimism about their career progress within the organizations. The results further indicate that the respondents perceive women assertions as the most important factor for their career development followed by other two factors, namely, societal attitude and organizational work culture in decreasing order of their importance. Women executive feel that they can handle organizational issues themselves, can fight against prejudices of society and are willing to achieve equality with men. The study concludes that women themselves can improve the employment opportunities by being assertive about their needs and wants.
