Teacher’s Corner: A Note on Interpreting an R 2 Value

Abstract

It is suggested that the standard traditional null hypothesis of Ï 2 = 0 be reconsidered in favor of Ï 2 = E(R 2 ). The test of the latter hypothesis is discussed. Also discussed is an effect-size index that is the difference between an adjusted R 2 and E(R 2 ).
