Amerindian Contributions to Western and World Civilization

Abstract

Long written off as a peole of savagery, native Americans mistakenly named Indians are yet to receive due credit for their contributions to civilization. Their friendly reception of the first Pilgrims, to whom they taught how to survive through harsh condition, is but one of many episodes worth noting. As Lillibridge (1968) aptly put it, native citizens of the so-called New World made significant contributions not only to the material but also the “social and intellectual life†of the newcomers who later on snatched up the entire Ameican continent all too unabashedly. An attempt is thus made in this paper to appreciate the scope and nature of the good marks on Western civilization left behind by Amerindians in a rather unassuming manner.
