Abstract

Owing to the rapid economic growth and dramatic rise of living standard in the last few years together with uprising awareness of domestic and global environmental problems, Taiwan is encountering a series of challenges for its economy to continue prospering in the 1990s and beyond. This paper provides an overview of the main energy issues that have been arisen under this changing environment. Analyses in strategies and programs, including the nation's Energy Master Plan and plan to liberalize energy industry, to overcome power shortage and stabilize energy supply as well as to improve environmental pollution and reduce carbon dioxide emissions are conducted. This is followed by a review of the energy demand management measures in Taiwan. The discussion then deals with energy research and development programs selected for a concentrated effort for the next ten years to upgrade energy efficiency and mitigate energy related environmental impacts.
