Worker Ownership American Style: Pluralism, Participation and Performance

Abstract

This article describes the legal, political and intellectual framework for employee ownership in the USA within its historical context. It analyzes the empirical experience with employee stock ownership plans, reporting key findings from an Ohio study in order to develop a model for the 'democratic, high performance employee-owned firm' that combines employee participation with improved company performance. It concludes by assessing the prospects for growth in the employee-owned sector in the USA.
