Technology and Employment in Telecommunications

Abstract

The nearly 700,000 members of the Communications Workers of America have witnessed first-hand the effects of technological change on jobs and workers. Although technological change can bring many benefits to Americans at home and at work, if implemented improperly technology can eliminate entire classifications of jobs while deskilling and dehumanizing the jobs that remain. Worker participation in all stages of the process of technological change can provide added perspective and hands-on expertise, benefiting both labor and management by contributing to the design of challenging and productive jobs that enhance economic efficiency and growth.
