Abstract

This paper uses information on prices of goods and services at the municipal level to study the effect of immigration on the price level in Italy from 2005 to 2009. The empirical analysis shows that the increasing number of immigrants has reduced the prices of goods and services. This effect is significantly higher for those services (laundry, repair, bar and takeaway food) whose prices are mainly determined at local level and highly influenced by the labor supply of immigrants.
