Strategic Choices in the Allocation of Children between School and Work: The Case of Burkina Faso

Abstract

Becker and Lewis (1973) have theorized the existence of a trade-off between quality and quantity of offspring, founding their study on the hypothesis of marginal costs of education which rise as the number of children increases. However, in poor countries and in the presence of credit constraints, the Becker-Lewis tradeoff could be overcome if parents decided to have their oldest children work, and the younger ones pursue an education. Using a database on the activities of children in Burkina Faso we show how the presence of older siblings in the labor environment increases the chance of younger children of receiving schooling.
