Abstract

The article examines public finance developments and its medium and long term prospects in the new member States of the European Union. Budget deficits have mostly a structural nature and require timely policy interventions, particularly in the area of social security spending. National economic programmes show that all countries in deficit aim at a substantial adjustment of their budgets in the medium term. In particular, further parametric reforms and a broadening of the funded pillar are expected to improve the sustainability of pension systems. As emphasised in the opinions expressed by the Council of the European Union, the realisation of countries' fiscal targets is subject to some risks.
