Abstract

This paper aims at understanding the role of the particular structure of the Italian manufacturing industry in affecting the in- vestments in R&D. Although it is well known that the Italian in dustry is characterised by a high weight of small enterprises and industrial sectors which production requires technologies operated by low-skilled workers, so far no attempt has been done to "measure" the effect of these factors on R&D. In this work it is shown that by taking the Italian manufacturing industry structure into account, the R&D increases but still remains lower than that invested in the main advanced countries.
