Ethics in Organizations: Fundamental Problems, Trivial Applications?

Abstract

An organization is made up of people, structures, rules, capital and technology, i.e. tangible and intangible assets whose utilization needs to be coordinated: optimised rationally, in the mind of the economists, influenced by the thoughts and behavior of its members, in the minds of sociologists. In fact both aspects are relevant, especially in business organizations, hence corporate ethics are concerned, linked to governance and “corporate social responsibility” (CSR). These three concepts are object of crucial debates on theoretical and operational levels. Some of the main aspects concerned are presented in the article.
