Abstract

Based on the results of quantitative and qualitative sociological research in Moscow and Rostov-on-Don, the article explores the role of a career in the formation of the professional identity of doctors in Russian megacities. The author concludes that most doctors do not consider the profession as a potential channel of social mobility and a successful investment in socio-economic status. Doctors in Russian megacities feel competitive in the labor market, but do not strive for career growth. This fact is due to the peculiarities of the staffing of health care institutions, high material and time costs for obtaining qualification categories with a small amount of material allowance. At the same time, doctors note the importance of professional growth associated with the deepening of knowledge on specialization, skills development, the application of new methods and technologies in practice, which is a creative factor in the formation of professional identity.
