Abstract

Employing a cointegration econometric model, with error correction mechanism, this work studies the relationship between trade openness and the wages-production ratio in the Mexican industrial sector. Contrarily to the Washington consensus paradigm, which postulates that macroeconomic stability and structural adjustment must positively impact the tradeable sector, generating better employment opportunities, we find that trade openness policy have deeply deteriorated the industrial sector wages, carrying on greater economic inequality.
