Abstract

In 1880, Bankimchandra noted that "Bengalis have no history" and charted out an agenda for nationalist historiography: "Bengal must have a history, or else there is no hope for it. Who will write it? You will write it, I will write it, all of us will write it. Every Bengali will have to write it." Bankim's views on history were not exceptional, nor was his nationalist call to history writing.1 After all, history is the source of nationhood.
