Los Estados de bienestar europeos en transformación: el impacto de la crisis de 2008

Abstract

La importancia del Estado de bienestar (EB) como conjunto institucional es a estas alturas indiscutible. Ello se debe no solamente a que ha acompañado el desarrollo de los países avanzados desde que iniciaran sus procesos de industrialización a finales del siglo XIX, e incluso, como han puesto de manifiesto las investigaciones de, entre otros, Gough et al. (2004) o Draibe y Riesco (2009), también posteriormente, los de los países periféricos. El otro motivo igual de evidente es porque, después del salario, los EB conforman la principal fuente de mejora de las condiciones de vida de la mayoría de la población (hasta el punto que no son pocos los autores que lo consideran una parte más del salario), lo que ayuda a comprender la relación entre los EB y los movimientos obreros a lo largo de la historia del capitalismo avanzado.
