Abstract

Abstract This paper has addressed an issue that has been a very topical issue in recent years. The sustainability of the current pension system is an issue that is generating a lot of written pages where visions that are not always convergent are poured out. Perhaps the only one that is common in any of the cases is that with the current rules the system is little or not at all sustainable. The issue in there is no awareness is in the criteria that must be changed for it to be sustainable. This contribution shows that this lack of sustainability is, in fact, the consequence of a lack of foresight of a phenomenon that was quite foreseeable. The ageing of the population and the consequent increase in the number of people entitled to a pension compared to the small number of employed people. This population imbalance is the source of the problems. After an analysis of the evolution of the main components of the growth of the Spanish population observed in recent decades, the current pension system in Spain and its foreseeable behavior in the future are analyzed. Next, the different proposals that have been put on the table to solve the problem of the sustainability of our pension system are analysed
