Café y transporte en Colombia: el Ferrocarril de Cúcuta

Abstract

El texto analiza el proceso de construcción y operación del Ferrocarril de Cúcuta, el cual fue pensado como un sistema de transporte con importantes resultados regionales. Este proyecto contó con una de las rutas más interesantes del siglo XIX: el trayecto de Cúcuta a Puerto Villamizar, el cual fue una iniciativa del capital privado, construido por ingenieros nacionales, en los tiempos y presupuestos asignados y sin ningún tipo de financiación o de subsidio gubernamental. Sin embargo, los otros ramales fueron tardíos y no cumplieron a cabalidad con su propósito. El sistema construido y operado por el Ferrocarril de Cúcuta le permitió a la elite económica y política liberal de esta región una vía de comunicación eficiente y de bajo costo para movilizar el principal producto agrícola de exportación del momento, el café, al tiempo que le permitió a la misma elite su consolidación hegemónica y, en no pocas ocasiones, le proporcionó los medios materiales para oponerse al gobierno de la Regeneración durante las guerras civiles del siglo XIX.
