Abstract

(With the increase in marginal employment, questions remain as to the determinants of these so-called mini-jobs. Using a hybrid panel model, labour market factors as well as gender and household-related factors were examined for men and women using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel. The analysis shows that the rise in marginal secondary jobs is firstly driven by the sector and working time of the first job. Marital status and individual and household income also appear to be crucial factors for performing a marginal secondary job. Overall, the data shows that the rationale for performing a marginal secondary job for women and men differs significantly. Our analysis therefore provides further information on gender segregation patterns in the German labour market.)
