Abstract

[eng] The Recent Developments of the History of Banking Crises in the United States This paper surveys the recent literature on banking crises in the United States between 1838 and 1933. A more microeconomic analysis provided these main results : — contagious bank runs took place during the « Free Banking » era - solvent banks have been subject to runs during the National Banking era — during the Great Depression, the main cause of bank failures has been a deterioration of local and regional economic fundamentals. Cet article fait le point de la littérature récente sur les crises bancaires aux Etats-Unis entre 1838 et 1933. Les résultats nouveaux ont été obtenus grâce à une analyse plus micro-économique des crises. Les archives utilisées ont permis de montrer que : - il y a eu des ruées contagieuses durant la période du « Free Banking » (1838-1863) - des banques solvables ont été touchées par des ruées durant le « National Banking » ( 1 863- 1 9 1 3) - durant la Grande dépression, la principale cause des faUlites bancaires a été une dégradation des fondamentaux locaux et régionaux.
