Abstract

[eng] The purpose of this article is first analyse the historical roots of the theoretical treatment of externalities as to understand R. Coase's in Problem of social cost [1960]). this way, the so-called theorem of Coase, which was in fact formulated by GJ. Stigler, is shown to be opened to internal criticisms. In a second time, we deny the relevance of the identification of Coase's analysis to the results coming from a theorem which is not of his own. As a matter of fact, Coase provides a new research program based on a criticism of the neo-classical standard analysis. Consequently, the theorem is not always available because the transaction cost theory to which Coase refers to is not directly related to a substantial analysis of the behavior of agents (that is the marginalist theory analysis) but is related to a procedural approach.
