Abstract

[ger] This paper first reviews the life-cycle - permanent income hypothesis approach explanations of aggregate households' saving behavior. Then, the paper attempts to assess, through empirical work in selected industrial countries, the extent to which this approach explains recent trends in personnal saving ratios. [fre] Après avoir rappelé le rôle et le poids des principaux déterminants de l'épargne des ménages dans le cadre de l'hypothèse du cycle de vie - revenu permanent, l'article examine, à partir des travaux empiriques menés dans quelques grands pays industrialisés, la capacité de cette approche à expliquer l'évolution observée du taux d'épargne des particuliers au cours des dernières années.
